What’s Up with Halloween Costumes?
Are Halloween costume choices becoming more provocative or am I just now noticing because my daughter is reaching the age of wearing them?
Granny M made the best costumes in the early days. You can’t find kids costumes like that at the stores. She did a mermaid for Sari one year that was so cute she was the center of attention at the pumpkin festival. My favorite costume she made for Drew was the year he went as Jack Skellington, our all time favorite ghoul. Drew’s bean pole stature made him a dead ringer for the tall and boney Pumpkin King, but he wasn’t crazy about the mask. We have learned that for him, face make up is the best.
Sari and I went into the Halloween USA the other day and I was actually uncomfortable. There are so many revealing and hootchie mama costumes that we had to be careful of what aisles we went down. Of course she is so mesmorized by the spooky sounds and hovering creatures that she is not even noticing the naughty nurse’s skimpy uniform, but it’s disturbing all the same.
(Because I can’t fit into them anymore.) I mean, it’s just disgusting and offensive. (I would give my pinkie toe to be able to wear that costume). And it isn’t just the adult costumes.
Not so much an issue with the infant costumes and toddler costumes, but some of the little girl and tweens costumes are ridiculous. The skirts are too short for one thing. Then the angle of every costume is “glam” or “punk” which means skimpy and trampy. It’s not that I approve of blood and gore over skin and glamour, but it IS Halloween, afterall. We have a rule, you can be sweet and innocent or you can be dead. That’s it. You can be a precious twinkle fairy or you can be a dead bride. Don’t even think about being a school girl.
Is it just me? Am I becoming a fuddy duddy? What do you think about this trend in vamping up our little vampires? Or is it not a trend and is the same as it always has been?
Whatever the case, I found some great costumes on sale at Amazon.com. Shipping is free on many of the Halloween costumes for kids and adults, including all the ones below!

Homemade Halloween costumes are always the best.
OMG your sooo right. Some (most) was a BIT provocative and skimpie. I would like to see them trick or treating in the snow. Yeah right.
Keep up the good work!

Have you ever seen the movie Mean Girls? In it, they talked about how Halloween was the only day where you could wear skimpy clothing and get away with it. I suppose stores have realized this and thus accommodated the trend. I don’t agree with it, Halloween is supposed to be scary, but what can you do.
I really enjoy the idea of one blog I have read. They have shown some interesting idea about the Halloween costume, and my farite one is that Bacon and Sausage for couples.
I agree the only way for a halloween costume is a home made one!
It’s definitely a trend nowadays. I feel pretty lucky that when I was a kid I didn’t feel pressured to dress like anything other than a pretty princess with a full-skirted gown at age 10. I think there are still plenty of non-skimpy costumes to be found though, luckily.
I love to wear costumes and so does everyone else. Something like this can’t be killed very easy and I think will be around for a very long time.
I always prefer the homemade Halloween costumes to the store bought ones. I also have to agree I am pretty sure, they are making much more provocative costumes now a days….
Halloween is becoming more and more driven for adults than children…. it is the business talking
Great constiumes fr halo ween
Very good your blog is my first visit, congratulations. I will come back, but with time
WOW! This is a record for comments for me I think! Thanks everybody. Now that you mention it, Airsoft, I do remember that part in MEAN GIRLS. Sounds like we all agree that commercial costumes are a little too risque and we all like home made!
Although, considering the big day is only about two weeks away and we don’t have costumes yet, we’ll probably be settling for store bought… but not skimpy!

I thought the same thing when I went into our local Halloween retailer. I was only in there twenty minutes tops, but could tell you how many costumes I saw that were completely inappropriate. It is sad when you have to dig through thousands of costumes just to find one that is age appropriate anymore..
I have to agree that Halloween has become more of an adult theme party than for the kids now. But I really don’t want to complain as it still makes the drive home on a Friday night interesting with many of these costumes now on every high street during October.
Avatarlar - I know, me too! I even went as Darth Vader one year, can’t get much less revealing that that!
Jessica - My Daughter was set on being a devil and I settled for the one that had a big flouncy skirt. Then I bought a red hoodie to cover up the skimpy top!
HSM - yes definitely adults, I agree. I am off to check out your link now. High School Musical Clothes? Uh Oh. I’m in trouble.
