Holiday Gifts on a Budget

Being on a tighter budget for the holidays this year doesn’t have to mean canceling Secret Santas or not participating in the gift exchange.  What it does mean is thinking before you spend.  Shopping for the best prices .  Put some effort into your shopping this year and show your loved ones how much you know about them and love them.

Jewelry is a popular gift item.  It’s inappropriate and irresponsible to overspend, but you don’t want to give something cheap, of course that turns your recipient green or rashy.  But there is an in between area of fun, fashionable jewelry items that please your loved ones without breaking the bank.  The internet is a great resource for wholesale fashion jewelry.  Just make sure you do a little research on the company and make sure the return policy is good in case your purchase doesn’t turn out the be the bargain you expected.

A bonus with jewelry is that there are so many projects around the holidays that support causes such as breast cancer awareness, hunger, and domestic violence.  These gifts are as satisfying to give as they are to receive when you know your item made a difference to someone somewhere.

A well thought out present where more time was spent than money is always the way to go.  Running your plastic through the machine may be easier, but spending time finding the perfectly matched gift for a fraction of what you would normally spend is more fun and apprciated.

What are you favorite types of gifts to give and receive over the holidays?

  1. I like the idea of giving Wal-Mart gift cards this year. If those on your gift list are in a tight spot they can use the cards for things they need, like food.

  2. Thanks Ms Willis and How To Guy!
It is definitely going to be a different kind of Christmas this year. Considering it has turned into a stressful over spending holiday, anyway, that might be a good thing!

And you’re right, WalMart cards are great. I like Home Depot cards too. So many little home maintenance projects pile up when the financial focus is elsewhere.

  3. I think this Christmas will actually benefit from the current economic crisis. Tighter budgets will make people actually think about the gift they purchase instead of buying the expensive flashy item that will impress. This will put us back to more of what the Holidays are about.

  4. Science, I was thinking that very think when I commented earlier today. We really needed to be reeled in didn’t we? Are we seeing the silver lining here?

  5. For those who have been “the one” to organize the group gift collection for teachers, coaches, friend’s showers or family birthdays, check out FrumUs.com. I’m a working mom who created this site after being shocked to find no easy way to organize a group gift online. Now you can open an online envelope and collect, take a vote, start a discussion and SHOP. It’s free to use. Please check it out and let me know what you think. Holiday cheers. Karen, FrumUs founder
