Working With What You Have

I read a quote somewhere about what is holding us back a lot, as a society trying to survive and recover from a bad economy, is holding onto ideals of  ”before.”  How the world worked “before”. How I did things “before.” But “before” is then.  Like it or not we have to do things differently now. I’ve been thinking about this lately in terms of household maintenance.

Ten years ago I made lots of money and my favorite thing to spend it on was my house. At one point everything in it was brand new and I had a plan for updating things, from the candles on the tables to the shingles on the roof – we were on a schedule. But then we had kids. And I lost my business. Then my husband’s employer (the auto industry!) took a bad turn and our income was further reduced.  We have been scaling back for years and the first things to go on the back burner were things around the house. As a realtor I have seen this happen to many houses, but didn’t realize it was happening to mine – until I did.

I was feeling a little depressed to begin with – just not having any spare money – no going to the movies or splurging once in awhile on the kids. Another summer passed without a vacation, the fridge and pantry were empy, car was on empty, and laundry was piled up – just one of those days that you feel like you’re “failing at life.”  (thanks to my good friend Ames for putting a name on it for me and assuring me I’m not the only one who feels it occasionally.) And I sat there and looked around the house. One flaw led me to another. Walls that needed painting, a torn shower curtain, missing trim, stuffing falling out of the couch cushions, towel bar dangling in the bathroom, outdated furnishings, appliances,  and fixtures… the list went on and on.  I had put everything off until “later.” But at that moment it hit me that I have no idea when that “later” is going to come.

So whereas I had previously thrown my hands in the air and said, “Nothing I can do here,” I made a list of the things I COULD do that would make an impact on the care and appearance of my home.  I replaced the torn shower curtain and hounded hubby til he fixed the shower bar. I washed the walls in the heavy traffic area that were such an eyesore. I wanted to freshen up my bathroom rugs but couldn’t afford that right now so I traded them out between bathrooms and some older ones that were still in good shape.  I really need new furniture but that’s a while down the road yet. I did come up with the idea though, that changing out a couple lighting fixtures would really update the appearance at a much smaller price.

Our house was built with the ugliest brass lighting fixtures. My decor is based on silvers. We were replacing the tacky fixtures one by one but never got around to the one in the hallway.  I had originally had trouble finding one in the silver family that looked good in there because of the size of the hall and the oak trim. But I found this super cool simple light that the silver I like with a lit bit of brown that really popped with the oak trim, online at this place called Murray Feiss lighting. I wanted to show you the old one and the new one because I like it so much but WordPress is being funky right now and will not upload pictures. Maybe later :)

All these little things have taken place over the span of months and it didn’t happen right away, but suddenly – I don’t feel like I live in a foreclosure any more.  And I haven’t had to spend a lot of money.  Alot of times it was just elbow grease, once I got it out of my head that “fixed” didn’t have to mean “new.”

So what I am trying to impress to you today is to let go of what you think you should be doing and where you think you should be, and simply take care of where you are what you’ve got.  You will be amazed how you start to see things differently.

Tanning Despite Warnings

Speaking of health and beauty, how does tanning fit in? 20 minutes in the tanning bed is provides an instant boost to your complexion for the short term, but in the long run, can actually have a negative affect on your skin. That makes the question of “to tan or not to tan?” a tough one. I am FOR tanning.

I was 18 years old in 1989 when I was a senior in high school and used to sign myself out of school early to stop at the tanner before I went home. Tannin beds were pretty new then, and very exciting. Is it still popular?

I know there are health risks and wrinkly risks associated with tanning, but I wear my goggles and my lotion and stick to the recommended exposure time.  I am minimizing my risks so I can take advantage of the benefits of tanning.

I’m really not even “tanning” by definition. I don’t care as much about being bronzey as I did when I was 20. But I do care about having energy to make it through the day and 20 minutes in a tanning bed gives me the hit of sunshine I need living in the midwest where skies are gray and the cold seasons are too bitter to enjoy daily outdoor activities, and the lack of sunshine leads to depression.

A zap of artificial sunlight in the meditative environment of a tanning bed does wonders for my disposition as well as my casper like complexion.

The only frustration I have is with choosing a lotion. I am a sucker for marketing and tanning products come in cool packaging!  I need to study tanning lotion reviews before I go in so that I won’t be so overwhelmed when I get there.

Christmas on Commission

early-xmas-shoppingI know it’s early but I am starting to think about Christmas. It has taken me several years as a commission based earner to finally figure out that my shopping habits need to be based on when I actually GET money, not on calendars or holiday sales. Now that I think about it, I suppose the ideal situation would be to have the discipline to put aside the money, as I get it, for those Ugg boots my daughter wants or the Xbox for my son – and hold it until the big holiday sales begin. That way I can take advantage of the bargains. Right? I don’t know though. Who can do that?!

Living on commission takes some work and getting used to. I think if I focus on just starting early, planning, and buying early for this year – it will be a success. Maybe next year I’ll  perfect the process and set aside my shopping funds so that I’ll be able to save money at sale time too. :)

Now is the Time

now_watchHouse prices and mortgage rates are so low – now is the time to buy a house.

With the kids gone for the weekend – now is the time to work on that basement project.

Back to school is just around the corner – now is the time to initiate a new schedule and routine.

I’ve got a big commission coming next week – now is the time to think about which of those bills to pay off.

With so much funding available and the convenience of so many online schools – now is the time to go back to college.

So much to do.  No better time to do it than now. Except I’m exhausted. Now is the time for me to go to bed.  It will all still be here tomorrow.

More Product Review Please. For Me Anyway.

I am pessimistic about any new diet and health management products that come on the market. The products are expensive and I am sure the statistic of how much money is spent on weight loss products is pretty high. Follow ups on all those cases would probably show a trend of dissatisfaction and money wasted. There was a day when you could get real honest to goodness samples of products to try before you buy. Then came along the mini samples WITH the agreement to give your bank information for an auto ship of the product. Lately I haven’t even seen those, though.  Maybe if I blog loud enough I’ll get some free products to do a no xplode review or try out the latest coolest piece of exercise equipment.  Anyone?

Blemishes, and Facial Hair, and Hormones, Oh My!

We woke up this morning to zits galore! You may have heard that we have a double dose of puberty going on in my house with my ten year old daughter and fourteen year old son getting hormonal at the same time.

With my daughter we have been dealing with blotchy skin and small blemishes for a couple of years. But this morning my son’s perfectly smooth and handsome face has a few giant, messy pimples spread around with that new facial hair that’s sprouting. Lord help us.

I have been googling today because I don’t know what good acne care consists of these days. Maybe it will be gone in a couple of days. We’ll see. But in the meantime I am checking out Differin reviews and ProNefrin claims so I’ll be ready if the problem gets worse.

Seasoned parents of children who’ve survived puberty… any skin care tips for us about to face the hormone challenge?

Doctor Knows Best When it Comes to Weight Loss Aids

Okay. Considering my last few posts it almost sounds like I am bashing weight loss products but I’m really not. I just know how commonly they are abused. I’ve been an abuse in fact. But that doesn’t mean they should never be used. It just is just very important to be familiar with the pills and supplements you put in your body and the risks associated with them. If you want to learn more about weight loss pills you absolutely need to talk to your doctor, not research them online and make decision about what is right for your body based on the reactions of someone else’s.  Okay? End of lecture.

Mind over Matter

Well apparently I am on a diet pill kick. Once i get started on this subject I’m usually stuck for a bit. It’s such a hot topic! It’s oneo fthe most researched matters online and it is a hot button issue for me too. here’s the thing. I am an addict I think. I love diet pills like Fastin and Adipex and if I had one in front of me right now I’d probably take it just for the energy factor.

I never feel like I have enough hours in the day but the truth is even if I had more hourse I woulld still poop out around 3pm – so what’s the point in wishing for longer days? To combat that I used diet pills, relying on their even long lasting energy to make it through the day. This is not good.

If you can relate to what I am saying and you are using diet pills for the same reason, it’s time to admit that you know it’s not heathty. You need more sleep, you need to eat better, and you need to be kinder to yourself. They you’ll enjoy a healthier, vibrant feeling body with sustaining energy to help you meet all your goals for each day.

Alli Scares Me

And speaking of weight loss supplements, the Alli reviews I’ve heard are ridiculous! Have you heard much about it? Most the other high profile diet aids kill your appetite and give you energy. The way I understand it, Alli does that too, but takes it a step farther by punishing you if you break the rules and eat something bad.  I heave heard so many reports of people being sent running to the restroom- at work, at the mall, at dinner- after eating the wrong type of food. That scares me! Have you heard the same stories? Have you tried Alli? Share your experience!

The Best Weight Loss Supplement is Not Found in a Pill

I’ve said it before but I think it is important enough to say it again- although I believe there is a place for diet pills this crazy world of over indulgence and metabolic challenges, the  best weight loss supplement is useless without your commitment, hard work, and good attitude.  No diet pill in the world will deliver the results you want without exercise.  And any weight you lose while on supplements will return when you go off them if you don’t make the necessary healthy lifestyle changes.  Just a quick reminder prompted by a conversation I had with a friend today. Do you have a healthy lifestyle?
